History
the Pawnee Fire Deptartment & Protection District
Pawnee Fire Dept was founded on July 10, 1893. At the time of its founding,
the department had 43 members and was led by Chief J.R. Harris.
The deptartment's first piece of firefighting equipment was a
large chemical type extinguisher mounted on two wheels. The extinguisher
was purchased for $600 with money given to the fire department
by the Village of Pawnee.
Later, the Village of Pawnee passed an ordinance, known as Ordinance
#25, which stated that the department may have 25 or more members
and that the Village would pay for hose, ropes, ladders, etc.
For this purpose, the Village of Pawnee agreed to pay a sum not
to exceed $50.00 per year for the purchase of these items.
At the time the Fire Department got the it's first horse-drawn water
wagon, the owner of the horses was paid a sum of $2.00 per pull.
The first truck was a 1922 Ford and was later replaced by a 1925 Reo.That
truck was in turn replaced by a 1941 Chevy. Later came a 1953
Ford.
The first siren the Pawnee Fire Dept had installed was in 1945. Each
different sounding of the siren meant something different. Remember,
at that time there were no such things as our radios and pagers.
The Pawnee Fire Protection District as it exists today was formed in
1957.
